Understanding the "Remember Me" Checkbox in Contact Forms and Chat Widgets

The "Remember Me" checkbox (also labeled as "This is a private computer" or "Stay logged in") is a feature in LiveAgent's contact forms and chat widgets that improves user experience by automatically recognizing returning visitors.

What Does the "Remember Me" Checkbox Do?

When a visitor checks this box, LiveAgent stores their information (such as email address and name) in a cookie on their device. The next time they open the contact form or chat widget, their details are automatically pre-filled, so they don't need to enter them again.

Why Does It Say "Private Computer"?

The checkbox explicitly mentions "private computer" due to privacy and data protection regulations such as GDPR. This label serves as a security reminder to users:

  • On a private computer: It is safe to check this box. Your information will be remembered for future visits.
  • On a shared or public computer: You should NOT check this box. Doing so could allow other users of that computer to access your stored information.

How It Works

  1. Visitor fills out the contact form or pre-chat form
  2. Visitor checks the "Remember Me" checkbox
  3. LiveAgent stores the visitor's details in a browser cookie
  4. On the next visit, the form fields are automatically populated with the stored information
  5. The visitor can submit the form more quickly without re-entering their details

Removing or Hiding the Checkbox

If you do not want the "Remember Me" checkbox to appear in your contact form or chat widget, you can hide it using custom CSS code. For detailed instructions, refer to the support documentation on customizing your chat button or contact form with CSS.

Important Security Note

Always remind your users that this feature should only be used on devices they personally own and control. On shared computers in offices, libraries, or public spaces, users should leave this checkbox unchecked to protect their privacy.
